ABOUT US

Spelthorne Young Voices was formed in February 2003 and is a community-based youth choir for the Borough of Spelthorne, which is open to everyone of junior and senior school age. The aim of Spelthorne Young Voices is to encourage and inspire young singers, whilst helping them to develop good musical habits, discipline and musicianship.

September 2006 saw SYV expand to form SYV Senior & Training Choirs
September 2013 SYV launched a third choir – Junior choir for 3.5-5year olds

SYV perform on a regular basis and sing a varied repertoire from gospel, classical to musicals and popular songs.

What does SYV want from its members? We are not asking for trained singers, although if you are one we would be delighted to see you! We are not looking for experienced musicians or the ability to read music. SYV recruits members of junior and senior school age, who are enthusiastic and have a strong sense of commitment and a love of music. To achieve a high standard of music it is necessary that members attend rehearsals regularly and take part in concerts. SYV are a team and every member has an essential role to play.

What does singing in a choir offer you? The enjoyable experience of learning and performing a wide and varied repertoire, whilst developing skills as a singer. It also provides the opportunity to make new friends and to work as part of a team. Singers possess a number of highly transferable skills: Members will find that being part of the choir will help to supplement their school work, whilst also promoting many qualities such as commitment, social skills, accuracy and confidence.

Where and when do we rehearse? Rehearsals are held at St Peter’s Church, Staines – Please see map below.

Junior Choir rehearse on Wednesdays 4:45 – 5:15pm – Ages 3.5 – 5
Training Choir rehearse on Wednesdays 5:00 – 6:00pm – Ages 6-11
Senior Choir rehearse on Thursdays 6:30 – 8:00pm (with break) – Ages 11-21

What do we wear for concerts? Concert uniform consists of an SYV sweatshirt and polo-shirt with plain black trousers. The sweatshirts/polo-shirts belong to the choir and will be issued to members for concerts.

SENIOR CHOIR

SENIOR AND JUNIOR CHOIRS

SENIOR CHOIR

Musical Director: Co-Founder Jo Gardner.
Jo’s passion for singing was fostered at a young age when singing in her local church choir which provided her with many opportunities to perform both in the UK and throughout Europe. This led to being a finalist in the Radio 3 competition Choirgirl of the Year and spurred her on to continue vocal training in the US as well as here in the UK. Aside from SYV Jo is currently the Music Director for the annual St Peter’s Proms concert and also directs The Incidentals.

In 2006 Jo was presented with the Mayor’s Award and more recently in April 2015 was awarded with the Civic Award in the Borough of Spelthorne for her outstanding contribution, dedication and encouragement to the Spelthorne Young Voices to whom she offers her services on a voluntary basis.

Now in their 13th year, SYV rehearse weekly during termtime and produce two annual concerts. Outside of these they regularly perform for other charities and musical organisations whether it be choral societies, vocal ensembles, wind/symphonic orchestras or for recording purposes. The range of repertoire is varied and members are encouraged to learn to read music, but always perform without. Whilst the main goal is to perform as professionally as they are able, SYV also encourages social skills, fosters confidence and promotes self discipline.

With a broad repertoire of music, the Senior Choir sing in two-part and three-part harmony, mostly of a secular nature but all from memory. Aside from performing in and around the borough of Spelthorne, usually by request, for Civic Services, concerts, charity events etc SYV have also performed with other youth choirs
SYV have taken part in BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year competition as well as Voice in A Million at the O2 and several recordings at Shepperton a Studios.
Senior Choir Accompanist: Alex Norton 2013 – present

JUNIOR & TRAINING CHOIRS

Training Choir
Due to SYV’s ever increasing membership, it became necessary to form a Training (formerly Junior) Choir in order for SYV to meet the needs of all it’s members. With assisted funding from Surrey County Council Local Committee of Spelthorne, the Training Choir opened it’s doors in September 2006 with 12 members and has since grown to 30 members. The aims of the Training Choir are to inspire young singers and to provide them with excellent vocal and musical skills that they can carry forward when they move up to join the Senior Choir.

Junior Choir
September 2013 saw the launch of the new Junior Choir for 3.5 – 5year olds – this is a 30 minute session that crosses over with the beginning of the Training choir’s rehearsal and aims to encourage younger children to continue their love of singing and to introduce them to singing as part of a choir.

Rehearsals for both choirs consist of musical warmups and group vocal tuition that are fun as well as educational.

Music Director: Bimbi Shaw-Cotterill

Bimbi is a freelance Soprano having studied with the English National Opera and Obtaining her Concert Singing diploma from the University of London. Alongside her singing career she also enjoys teaching Voice, Piano and Violin and is the Vocal Tutor for Surrey Youth Choir.

Junior Choir Accompanist: Camilla Jeppeson 2008 – present
